Cost to Paint a House

Enter your room size and your price per gallon to estimate interior paint and labor in US dollars. Interior gallons come from the paint calculator. Exterior gallons come from the exterior paint calculator when you turn that part on. Material cost is those gallons times your price. Labor cost is the paintable square feet times your rate. Both money fields start blank, so a blank price stays at $0. Coverage starts at 400 sq ft per gallon (about 9.8 m²/L) only because that is the paint calculator's editable starting point, and the tin can say otherwise.

How we calculate

Interior area and litres = paint calculator (length, width, height, doors, windows, coats, coverage, waste). Exterior area and litres = exterior paint calculator when the exterior switch is on, using the same coats, coverage, and waste. Gallons = litres ÷ 3.785411784. Square feet = square metres ÷ 0.09290304. Material = gallons × your price per gallon. Labor = square feet × your labor per square foot. Total = material + labor. A blank price leaves that dollar line at $0.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room, 8 ft high, with no openings, one coat at 400 sq ft/gal and no waste is 352 sq ft and 0.88 gal. As an example only, $40 per gallon is about $35 of material and $1 per square foot is $352 of labor. Leave the price blank and the total stays $0. Prices are yours. See the methodology page.

A gallon price times the paint quantity

Enter your square footage, or the room that produces it, and your price per gallon to estimate paint and labor in US dollars. A 12 by 10 foot room is the starting point. The gallon price and the labor rate per square foot are yours. Leave either one blank and that dollar line stays at $0, which means the price has not been entered. No shop price and no painter’s rate are stored.

Measuring the rooms you will paint

A cost to paint a house is only as honest as the price you type. Prices are yours. See the methodology page. Interior quantity is the paint calculator: perimeter times height, minus about 20 sq ft per door and 13 sq ft per window, divided by coverage, times coats, times waste. A 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls, no openings, one coat, and 400 sq ft/gal is 352 sq ft and 0.88 gal. If you type $40 per gallon, material is about $35. If you type $1 per square foot of labor, labor is $352. If you type nothing, the total stays $0.

How litres become a dollar estimate

DIY versus hired labor is the labor field. Leave it at 0 when you are painting yourself and you only want the paint. Type a rate when someone else will paint, or when you want to value your own time. The rate is per square foot of paintable wall, not per room and not per day. If your painter quotes a day rate, do not force it into this field. Keep the gallons, and compare the quote with the material line separately. Exterior walls are off until you switch them on. They use the exterior paint calculator and the same coverage, coats, and waste as the interior, which is convenient and sometimes wrong. An exterior tin often covers fewer square feet. If it does, run the page twice rather than sharing one coverage.

Typing a gallon price and a labor rate

Ceilings, trim, and primer are not in the total. The ceiling page and the primer line on the paint page are the places to measure those, and you would add the money yourself. Several rooms are several runs. Add the totals. Do not average the prices. Limewash does not belong at 400 sq ft per gallon (about 9.8 m²/L). The limewash page starts at 300 sq ft per gallon (7.43 m²/L). If you bring a limewash coverage here, type it over the paint default. Sales tax and delivery are part of the price you type if you want them in the total. The page will not add a percentage it was not given.

Checking the paint estimate

The dollar sign is the currency. The amount is the number you typed. Take the gallons to the paint page if you want cans. This page shows gallons so the price per gallon stays a single multiplication.

Paint quantities before you type a gallon price

Two coats, 400 sq ft/gal (about 9.8 m²/L), one door, two windows, and 10% waste. The dollar columns stay at $0 because this page does not store a paint price or a labor rate.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the price blank and reading the $0 total as a market cost. It is $0 because you have not typed a price.
  • Using 400 sq ft/gal (about 9.8 m²/L) after the tin says otherwise.
  • Turning on exterior and forgetting the perimeter is a different wall from the room.
  • Treating the dollar sign as a stored shop price. The symbol is US dollars. The amount is the number you typed.
  • Adding tax in your head and also in the price. Put the price you want multiplied.
  • Using this page for limewash without replacing the coverage. Limewash coverage is not 12.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to paint a house?

Gallons × price per gallon, plus the paintable area times your rate per square foot. Both rates start at 0. This site does not publish a price per gallon or a labor rate.

What is the DIY total?

Set labor to 0 and type only the price you pay for paint. The total is then the material line.

What is the labor total?

Type a rate per square foot. It multiplies the paintable area from the paint calculators, not the floor area.

Why does coverage start there?

It matches the paint calculator's editable starting point, 400 sq ft per gallon (about 9.8 m²/L). It is not a price and it is not limewash.

Does this include ceilings?

No. The ceiling paint calculator is separate. Add that area yourself if you are painting it.

Which currency?

Yours. The fields are plain numbers.
