Flooring Cost Calculator

Enter the room and your price per square foot to estimate flooring, underlayment, and labor in US dollars. Area is length times width, then waste. Each price multiplies that area in square feet. A blank price stays at $0. The notes under the result name the product the area might be. They are not prices.

How we calculate

Area = length × width. Area with waste = area × (1 + waste %). Square feet = that area ÷ 0.09290304. Material, underlayment, and labor each multiply the square feet by the US dollar rate you type. Total = the three money lines. A blank rate leaves its line at $0.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room with no waste is 120 sq ft. As an example only, $4 per square foot of material, $0.50 of underlayment, and $2 of labor are $480, $60, and $240. A blank price stays at $0. Prices are yours. See the methodology page.

A square-foot price times the floor

Enter the room and your price per square foot to estimate flooring, underlayment, and labor in US dollars. The area grows by the waste percentage first, then each price multiplies that same area. Leave a price blank and its line stays at $0. Tile still needs grout and thinset from their own pages if you want those materials in the budget. Prices are yours. See the methodology page.

Measuring the floor you will price

Flooring cost is three multiplications. A 12 × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. Ten percent waste makes 132 sq ft. Whatever you type per square foot is multiplied by that area. The worked example uses no waste so the arithmetic is 120 times the rate. Leave a price blank when you only wanted the area. Prices are yours. See the methodology page.

How square feet become a dollar estimate

Material notes, without inventing a price: laminate and vinyl are usually priced on the pack, and the pack calculators turn the room into packs. Hardwood by the pack is the same. Hardwood by the board is a linear-foot problem first. Tile is a count of tiles plus grout plus thinset, and those quantities are not inside this price unless you fold them into the price per square foot yourself. Carpet is often a roll width, and offcuts depend on the roll. Underlayment is its own roll count on the underlayment page. If you set an underlayment price here, it assumes you buy underlayment for the whole wasted floor area. That is right for a sheet that covers the room and wrong for a product you only place in a strip.

Typing a square-foot price

Labor is your rate per square foot of the wasted area, not a day rate. A fitter who quotes the room is a single number you should compare with this total, not force into the field. Removal of the old floor, skirting, and moving furniture are not included. Baseboard is a separate linear quantity. Waste should match the product page. If the laminate page already added 10 percent and you add 10 percent again here, you have priced 21 percent. Pick one place for waste.

Checking the flooring estimate

No currency is printed. No laminate price, tile price, or oak price is stored, because a stored price would be an invention the day after it was typed. Run one material at a time and write the totals down. Kitchen and bathroom remodels are not estimated on this site. Those scopes need sources this project does not have.

Grout and thinset stay outside this price

A pack price converts to a square-foot price by division, not by this form's waste field. A pack that covers 20 sq ft and costs 40 of your currency is 2.00 per square foot. Type that. The waste field then grows the area, which is correct if the pack price was the material only. If the seller already added waste to the quote, set waste to 0 here. Tile that needs bags of thinset is not in that rate unless you fold the thinset money into the price yourself. It is cleaner to price the floor here and add the thinset bags times your bag price beside the page. The same is true for grout. Labor that includes moving furniture should be in the labor rate you type, or left out and added as a lump sum. The form will not itemise a lump sum. Compare two materials by running the page twice and writing both totals down.

Floor area before you type a square-foot price

Waste is 10%. Material, underlayment, and labor are $0 until you type them. No shop price is stored.

Common mistakes

  • Reading a $0 total as a quote. It means the prices are still blank.
  • Applying waste here and also on the pack calculator, then adding both orders.
  • Using one price for tile and underlayment without meaning to. They are separate fields.
  • Treating the dollar sign as a stored shop price. The amount is the number you typed.
  • Forgetting that hardwood, vinyl, and carpet do not share a price just because they share an area.
  • Putting grout or thinset into the flooring price without deciding to.

Frequently asked questions

How much does flooring cost?

Area with waste times the three rates you type. Nothing is filled in for you.

What price should I use?

The price on the product you are actually buying, per square foot. Different materials do not share a default.

Does underlayment use the same area?

Yes, including waste. Set its price to 0 if the floor does not need it.

How do I compare materials?

Run the page once per price. Laminate, vinyl, hardwood, tile, and carpet calculators count the packs or tiles. This page only prices the area.

What about grout and adhesive?

They are separate calculators. Add their cost only if you have a price and a quantity.

Which currency?

The currency of the numbers you type.
