Hardwood Flooring Calculator

Hardwood packs use the laminate formula. Floor area is length times width. Waste grows that area. Packs are the wasted area divided by the square feet printed on the pack, rounded up. There is no price per pack and no hidden waste on top of the percentage.

How we calculate

Floor area = length × width. Area with waste = floor area × (1 + waste %). Packs = ceil(area with waste ÷ pack size). This is the same function as the laminate calculator.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. At the form’s waste that is 132 sq ft. A pack of 20 sq ft is 7 packs.

Cartons for a straight hardwood lay

Hardwood ordered by the carton is the floor area with waste, divided by the square feet in one pack. A straight lay often stays near 10 percent waste. A border, a staircase landing, and a herringbone do not. The pack size starts at 20 sq ft, so replace that figure with the carton before you order.

Measuring a hardwood floor

Hardwood sold by the pack is an area problem. The calculator multiplies the room and divides by the pack. It is the same code path as laminate, and the unit test requires the two results to match for the same inputs. A 4 by 3 room is 12 square metres. Ten percent waste is 13.2. Packs of 2 square metres are 6.6, which round up to 7. If the pack says 1.68 square metres, type 1.68. Do not round the pack size up before the division. The ceil happens once, at the end.

How the room becomes packs

Waste is the whole allowance for cuts, a bowed wall, and a damaged board. A straight plank floor with a simple border may live with 10 percent. A herringbone or a border in another species wastes more at every change of direction. Raise the field. Do not also add a spare pack in your head and then forget you did both. If you want one spare pack, order the calculated packs and add one at the yard, and keep the calculation itself honest.

Ordering hardwood cartons

Boards sold by the linear metre belong on the square-metres-to-linear-metres page, using the cover width. Using both pages for the same floor double-orders. Underlayment is its own roll count. Baseboard is the perimeter minus doors. None of those are inside the pack. Acclimation and grade are product instructions, not maths.

Checking a hardwood order

An L-shaped room should be summed first. If you run this page twice, each run applies waste, which is fine, but a shared cut might be counted twice. Adding the areas and applying waste once is usually closer. There is no price per pack on this page. The flooring cost calculator takes a price per square foot you type, including zero.

Hardwood fields and starting values

Straight lay versus a pattern

A second worked room keeps the pack maths visible. A 16 × 12 ft room is 192 sq ft. At 8 percent waste the order area is 207.36 sq ft. A pack marked 20 sq ft is 207.36 divided by 20, which is 10.37, so 11 packs. The ceil happens once. If you round the area to 22 first and then divide, you can add a pack you did not need. Keep the waste in the field and let the function round. Straight plank in one direction, with the boards parallel to the long wall, usually wastes less than a diagonal. If you change direction in a hallway, treat the hallway as its own rectangle so the offcuts are not assumed to travel around the corner. They sometimes do, and you can lower waste if you know you will use them. Moisture, acclimation, and the direction relative to the joists are installation rules on the pack, not inputs. Underlayment rolls are the underlayment calculator. A glue-down floor may not need underlayment and may need a trowel coverage from the adhesive bag, which is the thinset page pattern: type the coverage, do not expect a chart. Nails or staples are not counted. The flooring cost page can price the square metres after you type a price. It does not know the pack size.

Hardwood packs for a straight lay

Waste is 10% and the example pack is 2 m², the form’s starting pack size. Replace 2 m² with the number on the carton.

A diagonal or a herringbone needs more waste than this straight-lay row.

Common mistakes

  • Adding another waste factor after the percentage.
  • Using the carton weight instead of the square metres.
  • Ordering linear metres and packs for the same boards.
  • Expecting a stain or a finish quantity.
  • Ignoring a border of a different width.
  • Reading packs as a price.

Frequently asked questions

How many packs of hardwood do I need?

Divide the area with waste by the pack coverage. A 12 × 10 ft room at the form’s waste and a 20 sq ft pack is 7 packs.

Is this different from laminate?

The pack maths is the same function. The product is not. Use the coverage on the hardwood pack.

How much waste for hardwood?

The field starts at 10 percent. Diagonal and pattern floors usually need more. The page does not choose for you.

What about the skirting?

The baseboard calculator is the trim. It is not included in the pack count.

Can I enter an L-shaped room?

Add the two rectangles first, then enter a length and width that multiply to that area, and do not add waste twice.

Is there a price?

No. The flooring cost page multiplies area by a price you type.
