Room Addition Material Calculator

A room addition material calculator turns the shell of a new room into quantities you can take to the other tools on this site. Floor area is length times width. Wall area is the perimeter times the wall height, minus 1.9 square metres for each door and 1.2 square metres for each window, the same openings the paint calculator uses. The slab line is the concrete calculator's slab volume at the depth you enter, with no waste and no bag count. Drywall sheets cover the net walls plus the ceiling. Paint litres use the paint calculator, including coats and waste.

Each door removes 20 sq ft (1.9 m²), the same allowance as the paint calculator. It is a typical door, not a measured opening.

Each window removes 13 sq ft (1.2 m²). Measure unusual openings and adjust the count, or subtract the real area yourself and lower the count.

Check the can. Many wall paints cover about 350–400 sq ft per gallon.

A common can is 1 gallon.

How we calculate

Floor and ceiling = length × width. Gross walls = 2 × (length + width) × height. Net walls = gross walls − 20 sq ft (1.9 m²) per door − 13 sq ft (1.2 m²) per window. Slab volume = floor area × depth, from the concrete slab calculator with waste left at 0. Drywall sheets come from the drywall calculator on net walls plus ceiling. Paint litres come from the paint calculator. Bag counts for concrete are intentionally not shown here.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room, 8 ft high, at the form’s openings, slab, sheets, coverage, and waste: floor 120 sq ft, net walls 318.61 sq ft, slab 1.48 yd³, drywall 16 sheets, paint 1.75 gal.

Buying a room addition as quantities

A room addition is easier to buy as separate quantities than as one remodel price. This page gives the floor area, the slab volume, the drywall sheets, and the paint for a rectangular room. Run it once for the new room. If the addition shares a wall with the old house, that wall is not new drywall on both sides, so do not count it twice. Ceilings are included in the sheet area because the drywall call uses the floor as the ceiling.

Measuring the new room

People searching for a room addition material calculator usually want a first list, not a contractor bid. Start with the inside length, inside width, and the height from the finished floor to the ceiling joists. Those three numbers create the floor area, the ceiling area, and the gross wall area. The form opens on a 12 × 10 ft room. Write the measurements on the plan and again on site. Additions often change by the thickness of a new wall or by a beam that drops the ceiling. If the ceiling is not flat, this rectangle is the wrong model and you should measure the board area directly in the drywall calculator.

How a room addition splits into materials

Openings use fixed allowances so this page stays consistent with the paint calculator: 1.9 square metres for a door and 1.2 square metres for a window. A pair of 1 m doors is not two standard doors. Lower the door count and account for the extra area yourself, or accept that the net wall will be a little high. The slab is a rectangular prism. Depth is millimetres, so 100 mm is a tenth of a metre and a 12 square metre floor at that depth is 1.2 cubic metres. Waste is not added to that prism. A real pour needs extra for a thickened edge, a low spot, and the concrete left in the chute. The concrete calculator is where that waste, the bag yield, and the ready-mix quarter-yard rounding live. Do not invent a bag size on this page to force a count.

Ordering sheets and paint for the addition

Drywall is the drywall calculator called with the net walls plus the ceiling. The sheet count is area maths. It does not know about joints landing on studs, and you may buy an extra sheet for that reason without changing the formula. The worked example uses the form’s sheet size.

Checking the addition before you buy

Paint uses the paint calculator, so coverage, coats, and waste behave the same way there. Coverage starts at 400 sq ft per gallon (about 9.8 m²/L) because that is the paint page's editable starting point, and the tin can say something else. Set coverage to 0 if you do not want a paint number yet: gallons and cans become 0 and the areas remain. Cans are gallons divided by the can size you type, rounded up. There is no labor rate and no price per gallon here. If you want money, open the cost-to-paint calculator and type your own price. Siding, insulation batts, a roof, and a dormer are not inside this box. Link across to those calculators once the shell quantities look right, and keep each yield in the units printed on the product.

Drywall and paint for a new rectangular room

Walls are 8 ft, the slab is 4 in, and there is one door and one window. Sheets are 4 × 8 ft. Paint is two coats at 400 sq ft per gallon (about 9.8 m²/L) and 10% waste.

400 sq ft per gallon (about 9.8 m²/L) is the paint calculator’s editable starting point. Replace it with the tin. The slab volume has no waste.

Common mistakes

  • Reading the slab volume as a bag count. Bags are on the concrete calculator, after you enter a real bag yield.
  • Using outside wall length for paint. Paint covers the inside face.
  • Forgetting that waste applies to sheets and paint, and not to the slab line.
  • Counting a 4 by 8 ft sheet as 1.2 by 2.4 m. Those sizes are close and they are not equal.
  • Leaving paint coverage at 12 without reading the tin. Twelve is a starting point shared with the paint page, not a promise.
  • Expecting roof, siding, or a dormer from this rectangle. Those are separate calculators.

Frequently asked questions

What materials does a room addition need?

This page estimates floor area, wall area, a rectangular slab, drywall for the walls and ceiling, and paint for the walls. It does not price them and it does not size a roof.

How much concrete is in the slab?

Length times width times depth, in feet and inches on this form. Use the concrete calculator when you want bags or ready-mix rounded to the next quarter yard.

How are doors and windows removed?

Each door subtracts 1.9 square metres and each window subtracts 1.2 square metres, matching the paint calculator. Odd sizes should be measured.

Does drywall include the ceiling?

Yes. Sheets are counted from the net wall area plus the floor area used as the ceiling. Waste is the percentage you set.

Why is there no cost?

No price is stored here. The cost-to-paint page multiplies litres by a price you type. Slab and drywall prices belong on a quote.

Can I use this for an L-shaped addition?

Run it once for each rectangle and add the areas and the slab volumes. The sheet count should be recalculated from the combined board area if you want one order.
